What does your day-to-day life look like in your position?
My day is busy and always brings something new and unexpected. I spend my days at work seeing patients in my office or up in the hematology/oncology clinic, talking with other members of the care team, and charting on my visits with patients. This means I spend most of my time listening and trying to learn as much as I can about the families I work with. I also spend time learning and staying up to date on the most current research related to the patients that I care for.
What do you enjoy most about your role, and what is your personal mission in the health community?
I most enjoy learning about the families that I work with and introducing them to the concept that “feelings are OK .” I think there would be so much benefit for our communities if we were all a little more open to experiencing feelings and not spending lots of time and energy forcing ourselves to feel certain ways. My hope is to support this approach to engaging with ourselves, which I think makes all the difference in how we experience the world and one another.
How does working with different health professionals help you excel in your position?
My brain works so much better when there are other brilliant minds around me whose brains work differently. My colleagues help me see different perspectives, understand things in new ways and be better able to care for patients.
What is one thing you try to accomplish each day at work?
Each day at work, I try my best to provide a space where people — patients and colleagues — can be their full and authentic selves.
When people read the Health Heroes books, what do you hope they learn or walk away with?
I hope that the books provide information about all the varied roles in healthcare and perhaps helps kids see how their own strengths might fit with a career caring for patients.
