We reached out to Josh A. Vu, M.S.N., R.N. — an amazing Mayo Clinic nurse and a major inspiration for the creation of this book — to answer questions about the importance of his role in healthcare.
What does your day-to-day life look like in your position?
The day to day of a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) R.N. involves providing specialized care to critically ill children. This includes monitoring vital signs, administering medications, coordinating with physicians and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure our patients’ needs are met. We also provide emotional support to young patients and their families, recognizing the unique challenges they face in navigating the complexities of healthcare. Our responsibilities extend beyond traditional nursing duties to include fostering an environment of empathy, compassion and holistic care. I have since transitioned into the nurse manager role in the pediatric intensive care unit. I have truly appreciated the opportunity to support our amazing team of healthcare professionals within the PICU to continue to provide excellent care to our patients and their family members.
What do you enjoy most about your role, and what is your personal mission in the health community?
What I find most fulfilling in my role is the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of children and their families during some of their most challenging moments. I hope that I contribute in giving them the best opportunity to live meaningful lives. My personal vision as a healthcare professional is to become a thoughtful, courageous and innovative healthcare leader who inspires others to love and to do good works. I aspire to lead by example, fostering a culture where empathy and innovation coexist. Ultimately, I aspire to contribute to a healthcare community that prioritizes both exceptional medical care and the well-being of those providing it.
How does working with different health professionals help you excel in your position?
Collaboration with different health professionals is crucial in the PICU. It is the only way we can truly meet our patients’ needs and give them the very best care possible. I work closely with many members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team. This collaborative approach enhances patient care by bringing together diverse perspectives and expertise. Each team member plays a unique role, and the synergy of the team helps us provide comprehensive and effective care for our patients.
What is one thing you try to accomplish each day at work?
One of my primary goals each day is to simply try to bring a smile to the faces of my pediatric patients and their family members. Whether through a kind word, a comforting gesture or a moment of shared laughter, creating positive and uplifting interactions is something I strive for. These small moments of joy can have a meaningful impact on the overall experience for the children we care for and their families during their time at Mayo Clinic.
When people read the Health Heroes books, what do you hope they learn or walk away with?
I hope that young readers are inspired to embark on careers in healthcare through these stories. Additionally, I want them to understand that if they ever find themselves in need of care, they can trust that they will receive the very best care here at Mayo Clinic. In addition, I hope these stories ignite a sense of purpose and a commitment to acts of love and good works. And foster a community that recognizes and values the profound impact each individual can have on the well-being of others.
