The Mayo Clinic Diet: Weight-Loss Medications Edition, by Donald D. Hensrud, M.D., M.P.H., Andres J. Acosta, M.D., Ph.D., and Tara M. Schmidt, M.Ed., RDN, includes tips on many topics related to diet and weight loss. Every section is full of valuable insight from Mayo Clinic experts — such as in the following excerpt about navigating social events while on a weight-loss medication. All of the tips throughout the book have one thing in common: a goal of helping people have a more positive life experience.
Navigating social events
Attending social events while on weight-loss medications can present challenges. But with some practical strategies, you can enjoy these gatherings while still staying on track. Here are simple tips to help you make mindful choices and have a positive experience.
Focus on socializing. Prioritize connecting with others. Engage in conversations, participate in activities and enjoy the company of friends, family or colleagues. Make the food table your last stop. By shifting your focus to the social aspect of the gathering, you can reduce the risk of overeating.
Plan ahead. Consider eating a light and nutritious meal beforehand to avoid arriving hungry. If possible, ask about the menu in advance. Knowing what will be served allows you to mentally prepare and make healthier choices that align with your goals.
Practice portion control. Social events often offer a variety of delicious foods, making it easy to overindulge. Decide ahead of time how much you plan on eating. Opt for smaller portions by using a smaller plate or selecting a few healthier options such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains. Once you’ve made your choices, move to another area away from the food and avoid going back for more.
Be mindful of your medication. Be aware of how your medication may impact your eating habits and adjust accordingly. If your medication slows gastric emptying, remind yourself to not overeat. This will help prevent nausea or vomiting. If your medication affects digestion, be mindful of foods that may trigger discomfort or cause heartburn and choose alternatives that are easier on your system.
Stay hydrated. Drinking water throughout the event can help you stay hydrated and curb excessive hunger. Sometimes thirst can be mistaken for hunger, leading to unnecessary snacking. Keep a glass of water or water bottle handy and periodically fill it up to ensure that you’re adequately hydrated.
