You’re planning for a pelvic surgery when your healthcare team suggests an additional, optional procedure. You’re surprised and a little confused. But then your doctor says the procedure — opportunistic salpingectomy — can significantly lower your risk of ovarian cancer.
Opportunistic salpingectomy (OS) involves removing the fallopian tubes to help prevent certain cancers that affect the female reproductive system, including cancers in ovaries, fallopian tubes and the membrane that lines the inside of your abdominal cavity (peritoneum). OS is considered opportunistic because the procedure is added on to a surgery you are already having, such as removal of the uterus (hysterectomy).
Although it may seem daunting to opt for an additional procedure, Mayo Clinic experts say that, for many people, OS can offer substantial benefits for minimal risk.
