Mammograms are important for breast cancer screening. They also can give important information about breast density.
Breasts have different types of tissue: fibrous, glandular and fat. Fibrous tissue is connective tissue that holds the breast tissue in place. Glandular tissue makes milk and carries it to the nipples. Fat tissue is where the body stores energy.
Breast density refers to the amount of fibrous or glandular tissue in the breasts compared with fatty tissue.
